Church Ceremonies

Infant Baptism

Baptism - an infant becomes a member of the church. At least one of the child's parents must be a member of the Evangelical Lutheran church. An infant should preferably be baptised within two months of birth.

You can settle the time and place of baptism at the parish office. The office clerk will give you the name of the pastor on duty, who will contact you before the baptism so that you can discuss the details of the baptism.

A couple wishing to marry must undergo an investigation of possible obstacles before the marriage can take place. The investigation is carried out by the Regional Central Register of the Diocese of Lapua and checks if either of the persons intending to marry is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Parish in Jyväskylä. The investigation takes seven days, after which the couple can marry.

For a marriage taking place outside Finland, the office can, upon request, issue a certificate indicating that according to the laws of Finland, the person in question has the right to be married by a foreign authority.

If a Finnish citizen wishes to marry a foreign national, the following documents must be presented to the Finnish authorities: an account of the personality and marital status issued by the registration authority of the person's home country and proof of membership in a Christian church or denomination, if the couple wishes to be married in a church.

Blessing a new home

It is an old Christian custom to bless a home. Family and friends can meet for this occasion.

A pastor may be called to lead the rite, but it can also be led by some other church worker or any Christian. The blessing of a new home includes thanksgiving to God and prayer on behalf of all who live in it.

The building does not have to be new; a blessing of a new home can be conducted after a family has renovated its old home or has moved into a new address. An entire family does not have to live in a home; the home of a single person can also be blessed.

A blessing of a new home can be linked together with a housewarming party, a baptism that is performed at home, a wedding feast or some other celebration.

Order of service when blessing a home

  • An opening hymn or some other music
  • Invocation ("In the name of the Father and of…") and introductory words
  • Psalm or hymn
  • Scripture reading (one or more passages)
  • [at this point, more hymns can be sung, and a pastor or speaker may deliver a short message]
  • Words of blessing and a prayer of intercession
  • The Lord's Prayer ("Our Father…")
  • Hymn of thanksgiving
  • Benediction
  • Concluding music

If you wish to call a pastor to lead the rite, please contact your local area parish or the pastor of international work.
